Give it some room

GardenZone's designer Nick Dickinson believes in taking life easy. That's why the first item that appears on his drawing board at the beginning of the design process is the seating areas, or more specifically tables, chairs and benches. Known for his love of the good things in life, Nick is motivated by more than a desire to put his feet up!

"Where you position seating really matters. It must be in the right place for the time of day it's going to be used. It's no good having morning coffee in deep shade or knocking back a gin and tonic watching where the sun's been and not where it's going".

Secondly, there must be enough room round the furniture to allow people to pass jugs, salad bowls and the like. "Over-estimate the space required round seating areas. Men often like to stand and chat, while women sit around the table. If you have the space it might be good to plan for two conversations going on at the same time, without too much being overheard!"

"When designing paths, once again over exaggerate the width especially when next to a planting border. It's wonderful to see plants bulging from the border overlaying the path. It looks more as though the plants rule the garden, as they should do. A wider path in the beginning will allow for this wonderful look."
