Talking to the Sunday Times about Trumpeters Lodge, a grade1 listed property in Richmond Surrey, agent Daniel Hutchins of Hamptons International said:
"it's such a compliment to be in the yellow book that it helps to sell a property and enhances its value. The property would have been priced at less than £1m without the garden".
Since the asking price was £1.25 million it doesn't take an Einstein to do the maths and realise that green plus yellow can make a pile of gold.
But there's more than one way to make digging victorious.
Homeowners who prefer to see the garden as an extra room, rather than an extra few acres to mow and weed are making their fortune, particularly in London's leafier suburbs.
Rather than toiling in their fields they are selling them, along with their existing house, to prestige developers like Thirlstone Homes, Nationcrest and Octagon Developments. Where once there was a rambling, even slightly dilapidated mansion, there could be two brand spanking new ones complete with manageable, attractive gardens and a nice high wall in between.
The trick is to approach the builders with planning permission and firm purpose!
As Tony Blair gives the green light to more houses and less green belt the opportunities are there for the taking. Those profiting from the idea could even lay claim to political correctness to boot!
